Modern in Melbourne 1

 Melbourne Architecture 1930 - 1950

Marcus Barlow

Selected Works

1929 32 Manchester Unity Building [Marcus Barlow]

Address: 91 Swanston Street

Notes: When this building was finished it was the tallest building in Melbourne. It was built 24 hours a day with three lots of eight hour shifts being rotated through. The corner tower is built in the commercial Gothic Modern Style which had inspiration from Raymond Hoods competition winning Chicago Tribune Tower. The street canopy is an early example of the move from posted verandas to cantilevered canopies.
