McCarthy Residence 1957

Address ; McKennel St, Heidelberg

Comments : The McCarthy House, as with the nearby Stephenson House, utilized steel pipe frame, masonry veneer and triangular pergolas to enliven a simple parti. Goad compares the McCarthy residence to the contemporary Case Study House Number 8 by Charles and Ray Eames in Los Angeles. To the extent that both were reliant on modular rationalised construction allowing for easy extension, this is reasonable. However there is a larrikin gaiety about the McIntyre house which makes the Eames house appear positively restrained and tasteful. " these modular houses by the McIntyres had an attractive freedom of composition within the rationality of the structural grid. One international example which was also based on similar principles of a module and the diagonal given expression was Bruce Goffís Wilson House at Pensacola Bay (Florida, 1951), which was a series of agglomerated 14 foot cubes framed in steel pipe with redwood boards between the frames laid in concentric squares. " Goad, P., 'Optimism and Experiment in Melbourne: The early works of Peter McIntyre 1950-1961'.
