Harry Norris - Mitchell House

Address: 352-362 Lonsdale Street

Date of construction: 1936

Client: Thomas Mitchell & Co. Ltd.

Builder: Hansen & Yuncken Pty. Ltd.

Engineer: Mr. Clive S. Steele

Located on the former Commonwealth Hotel site, Mitchell House is one of Harry Norris' most distinctive works. Its clean horizontal bands and smooth curved corner is counterpointed by a single off center vertical tower located irregularly on the Elizabeth street façade. The expression of horizontality is supported by cantilevering the floor slabs out to the site boundary, so freeing them from columns.
