Manchester Unity Building [Marcus Barlow] 91 Swanston Street

When this building was finished it was the tallest building in Melbourne. It was built 24 hours a day with three lots of eight hour shifts being rotated through. The corner tower is built in the commercial Gothic Modern Style which had inspiration from Raymond Hoods competition winning Chicago Tribune Tower. The street canopy is an early example of the move from posted verandas to cantilevered canopies.

1938 1940 Century Building 125-133 Swanston Street

The Century Building is like the Manchester Unity Building stripped of its gothic detailing. Like the Manchester there is a corner tower and a strong verticality. Both buildings are covered in terracotta tiles.
