Modern in Melbourne 2 Peter McIntyre Researchers: Edwin Halim, Komthat Syamananda
Address : corner of Belvedere and Holroyd St., Kew [severely altered]
Comments : The house sadly has been altered almost beyond recognition. It has a magnificent view over Studley park Golf Links, the Yarra River and the Northern Suburbs. The plan and parti of the house are strongly characterised by three jutting, flaring equilateral triangular bays oriented out towards the spectacular view. A loose connection is noted to the form of Bruce Goff's Trieto house of 1941 and the triangular houses of Ray Berg and Roy Grounds. Originally one arrived at the house beside a curving screen wall with huge diamond cut out. The wall itself was demolished by the second owner. Goad compares the Brunt House with the more austere formality of the contemporary work of McIntyre's friend and mentor Roy Grounds. "Instead of the restraint and subtlety of Roy Grounds' materials and enforced singularity of form at his Henty House (Frankston, 1950) or his own Hill Street house (Toorak, 1952-53), Peter McIntyre's use of color and geometry is exuberant and free, playful and expressionistic." Goad, P., 'Optimism and Experiment in Melbourne: The early works of Peter McIntyre 1950-1961'.
