Address Corner Aquila & Taurus Street, North Balwyn
Comments Stargazer was McIntyre first notable house whilst his office was at the University, designed for a young couple in North Balwyn. The Stargazer was the nickname for the M. Castle House. The roof was glazed as a window which allowed the inhabitants to use the floor as a base for stargazing. A two storey house on a concrete slab with ground floor of concrete bricks and upper floor framed in timber. In plan, bedroom and bathrooms on the upper floor on a mezzanine balcony, which was cantilevered of the south wall and held with rods to the north wall. This cantilevered floor became the roof of the carport and entrance terrace. North side of the roof was covered by aluminium sheet. South side of the triangle was the skylight wall, almost entirely glazed. Thermal problems arose as a result of the large area of roof glazing. The house also lacked acoustic separation between living and sleeping areas. Goad compares the Stargazer House to Oscar Niemeyer's staff housing at Sao Jose dos Compos (Sao Paolo, Brazil, 1947), but notes that "in Neimeyer's building there is not the daring structural experiment that McIntyre was to accomplish."
